Post-rock

I don't think anyone has mentioned This Will Destroy You or El Ten Eleven. Both of them are major influences to my bandmates and I, of course you cant forget Explosions in the Sky. I just listened to Connie by El Ten Eleven and loved the bass tone and thought I'd look to see if there are any posts about instrumental/post rock stuff. Stoked to find this thread!

I'm open to post-metal (or whatever) I'm not one to get into sub-genre debates ;) if you want to suggest bands have a go at it!

Cult of Luna, Pelican, Minsk, Agalloch (<3), Isis, Callisto, Neurosis... Solstafír's newer albums (esp. Svartir Sandar) might also be to your taste.

Personally, I find it harder to distinguish "post-metal" in comparison to post-rock, as the label connects a lot of acts from various subgenres. For example, atmospheric metal and modern doom have in my opinion already had similar attributes for a quite a while now without the post-prefix.

best style of music out right now! love post-rock/metal!

Pelican, Callisto, Cult of Luna, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Russian Circles, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Guapo, Intronaut, Marriages, Red Sparrowes, Mouth of the Architect, etc.

So freaking good and the bass players usually have a tone to kill for!

I'm pretty surprised that Caspian, Hammock and Maserati haven't been mentioned yet, wonderful stuff there.

I also love Hammock! While I listen to just about everything, I lean heavily toward shoegaze and post-rock most of the time. Listening to the new My Bloody Valentine right now. Very happy.

Some other suggestions:
Tortoise
Battles
Dirty Three
Jesu
Rothko
Stereolab
The Sea and Cake
The Twilight Sad
Lift to Experience (super recommend!)

other great instrumental/postrock...

rest
joy wants eternity
codes in the clouds
american dollar
daturah
emery reel
followed by ghosts
giants
if these trees could talk
red sparrowes
saxon shore
the sleep design
sonna
tristeza
unwed sailor
the mercury program

+1 to both of these posts, anything Sanford Parker is involved in pretty much.
Highly recommend checking out Cult of Luna and Mouth of the Architect and Storm of Light (they toe the line, not really "post-metal" though)

Also, what are you guys using to play this style of music?

This arrived in the mail today:

Ok i gave post rock a whirl, as far as i hear it , its kinda like movie soundtrack material, its cool, i could listen to it on a loooong road trip alone, but thats about it, i could play it , that might be fun.
But what does the post mean in post rock, after or alternative , instead of even, just cant get a grip on the name of the genre.?

Any post-rock fans on these boards? It's a fairly new musical interest of mine and I have to say I'm hooked.

Bands I like: GYBE, Grails, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Russian circles, pg.lost, Cloudkicker, Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, The Evpatoria Report, Explosions in the Sky, From Monument to Masses, Mono, Yndi Halda, Slint.

Hi mate and welcome.

I think you just named the majority of my favourite bands!

Definitely also check out these Tortoise, Battles, Jesu, The Twilight Sad and Lift to Experience as listed above. I also love, And so I watch from afar, Jeniferever and the major must 65DaysOfStatic!!!
