Post-rock

Replying to an older post on page 2 since I missed it earlier, but anyhoo:

Also, what are you guys using to play this style of music?

For me:
- 5-string Warwick Corvette / 6-string cheap-o bass
- Delay / TC Flashback 4x & Boss RE20 (for the oscillation)
- OD / Darkglass B3K
- Extras: Ebow, Fuzz (Swollen Pickle)

The delays give me reverb as well when needed. Thinking about adding a chorus/flanger and a volume pedal.

I'm also GAS'ing for a pawnshop/hellcat VI :)

I just did a general search for Caspian and found this older thread... I was dismayed to hear that the bass player, Chris Friedrich, passed away unexpectedly on the 25th.

My former band got to open for them twice when they came through town, they're all fantastic dudes and Chris was one of the most easy going of them all. Anyway, thought I'd share the sad.

KUATO just released a limited edition cassette(+ digital download) of two new songs from our upcoming record. We got it mastered by Joe Lambert who did all of the Russian Circles and the new Pelican. Check it out! http://kuatoband.bandcamp.com/album/groundwork-battle-of-bloody-creek

I used to be into Mogwai and Sigur Ros a lot about ten years ago but while i still appreciate the genre i kinda don't listen to much of it anymore. I could never get into Tortoise and as for GYBE (local heroes, i'm from Montreal) i found they often had songs that were way too long for their own good. They'd have like changing patterns in there out of which like 2 out of 5 would be really good and the rest could have been scrapped. That's the thing with mogwai, they weren't afraid to repeat more or less the same stuff for 7 minutes. For my taste Mogwai is the best post rock band. Well..or was..like i said, i haven't been up to date in quite a while. And sigur ros are good but i felt were a little too...similar. I mean all their songs sounded just there same more or less after a while.

My city is home to some amazing post-rock acts - some of which are making "waves", so to speak, overseas.

Without a doubt, THE best post-rock band to come out of Australia is sleepmakeswaves. Been mates with these guys for many years and I'm so glad to see them branching out and getting world-wide acclaim. When acts like 65 Days of Static personally invite you to join them on their European tour, you KNOW you're doing something right. They also never fail to sell-out their home shows either which is no easy task considering how poor our live music scene is here.

Other notable mentions include:

Meniscus (very powerful and hard-hitting post rock)

Solkyri (more ambient post-rock but they make up for it with their amazing stage presence)

Two bands to add to the pile. First is Irepress, they kind fall into the post-metal tag a bit since have heavy riffy guitars some time. These guys rival Russian Circles for best post rock rhythm section, insanely good bass and drums and the guitarists have excellent taste in how they interact with each other.

The other is New Zealand band Jakob. They've toured with Tool and their album "Solace" is one of my top favorite post rock albums.
