Am I the only one that's a little surprised that a few people are listing basses that they don't even own yet, as their favorites?

Sorry, that just seems odd to me. I've seen so many guitars and basses that looked killer on paper, and even made me drool in person, until I picked it up and tried it out. Some, no matter how pretty, just don't deliver the goods wheather it's in feel sound, over all experince etc.

IMO, an instrument isn't going to be considered "favorite" untill it's got quite a few miles on it, and has REALLY proved it self. (again IMO)


Am I alone in thinking/felling this way?

she's actually 18, but being only 5'1" doesn't make it appear so :hmm: but yeah, she does a lot of modeling, and I kept making the joke that I bought a $1200 bass to match her $40 dress :p

I just got a Squire VM Jazz Bass after hearing about all the good reviews about it and I really like it but I will always go to my Fender Precision Bass when I need a go to bass for most any kind of music I play

I hear ya and I agree to a point, and I'm also guilty of the accusation you stated. However, I played it yesterday and today and I was right, it is my favorite bass. I only own one other and it's a Gibson Tobias Renegade so I already knew it was going to be my main player. I sold all my other basses, other that the Tobias, and guitars in order to pay for it.

This is a hard one to swallow but the bass I play and the bass Im in love with are in contention I play this mainly, my American 62 reissue J:

And while it is an awesome J, one of the best out of all Ive owned (and let me tell you Ive owned a bunch, about 20) I mainly play it as my main because I spent a ton of money on it new and my wife would kill me if it just sat around in the case. Before I bought it and really I dont know why I did other than "everybody needs a J in there arsenal" thing and I just wanted an American reissue, I rediscovered my extreme love of P basses with this 50's P:

Its Fiesta Red, but really looks more pink in color, lovingly named Pinky by my wife, this bass just makes me grin when I see it on the stand, I cant speak for all of this model, but mine is built just as good as any American Fender Ive owned, (my J I ordered through a local dealer and I got a discount on it because it had a flake of paint missing at the edge of the neck pocket)and the pickup in it is super hot and seems to have a higher quality of sound at both ends of the tone knob spectrum than the J, especially on the mellow end. I really have to tweak around with the knobs on the J to get it anywhere close to the warm sound the P has on the near closed tone control end. Really theres nothing about the P that I dont like, other than maybe wishing it had a rosewood fretboard. Again I love the J and it produces tones only a J can, and Ive only had this one since the first of April, I think with a little more time it'll continue to grow on me.

I eyed this bass for a couple years as it sat ignored on my local music store shelf. Finally got bought it for well under half the list price. Doubt I will ever sell it. Plays like a dream.

Just wanted to add that this was in the 80's.
