How the heck do you do it????

I stumbled into an attachment routine that says my pics must be 2400 by 2400, but it's not clear how to do that. Please post some basic how-to instructions.

use a program like paint/photoshop to reduce the image size. They all have a resize option, where you can specify a percentage to reduce by or new dimensions to reduce to.

but you're probably better off using a site like photobucket / flickr and uploading your photos there and then just linking to them here. That way you are not subject to our attachment limitations
