Hey guys, I am new building instruments and making large modifications, but I would love to learn more about it and try it in the future. It is truly a beautiful art form. When I was in middle school, I built a body but I moved before I could wire any electronics and attach a neck.
I've been playing on a Schecter Diamond Series Custom-4 for the last five years. I've tried playing other basses and I just haven't been able to find anything that feels as nice that that neck. I love the width, I love the extra 4 frets, and I love the feeling of it. I recently bought a Fender Precision MIM and the neck is too fat for me. I've considered doing a quick switch with a Jazz neck, but I think I want to take it further and instead attach the neck of a Schecter.
A couple things about the Schecter. The neck width is 1 1/2 inches at the nut and 2 1/2 inches at the 24th fret. The Precision is 1 5/8 inches at the nut and 2 1/2 at the 20th fret. I haven't gotten in there yet to measure the pockets, but the Schecter is considerably longer. The scale length of the necks are different too. From the nut to the edge, the Precision is 23 5/8 inches long while the Schecter is 26 1/2 inches.
I would not just jump into this immediately, but I want to know if it is possible to accomplish.
