A dear old drummer friend of mine, Reuben, whom I haven't worked with in at least 15 years, has an annual potluck and jam session every Memorial Day weekend. My family and I made it out there this year and I saw some old friends and made some new ones. It was mostly old-school vintage country guys, a few guys who did some Doors songs, and a couple of kids who had just graduated from the Idyllwild Arts Academy High School who were really talented. It was a fun afternoon.
Reuben has a large back yard with lots of shade. This was the "stage" area. There were a lot of pickers there today.
This was our host, Reuben, cooking up tri-tip, dogs, and burgers.

This is Mark and Joe. Mark does a Roy Orbison act, in case you couldn't tell.
This is Gary, another friend whom I haven't seen in about 25 years.
These two kids were great. They had just graduated from the Invalid Link Removed and just completed their first album. Julian and his friend brought charts and since I was the only bass player there who knew how to read, I got the pleasure of sitting in with them. They had good jazzy, quirky tunes that were a lot of fun.
Being Memorial Day, I took the opportunity to sing an appropriate song, "Invalid Link Removed" by Luke Bryan.
The highlight of the afternoon, for me anyway, was having my 14 year old daughter sit in and jam. Actually we ended up doing a trio, just her on the acoustic guitar, me on bass, and Reuben on drums. The rest of the guys were busy setting up. So I guess we were the warm-up act.
