Pots and capacitors?

Higher value pots preserve more treble by shifting the resonant frequency of the pickups upward.

Capacitance is analogous to adjusting the frequency knob on a semi parametric EQ. The higher the capacitance, the lower the frequency center.

There are hundreds of threads on this, if you want a more thorough explanation. In a nutshell, however, it is in your best interest to disregard all information, buy a bunch of pots and capacitors, and let your ears decide what is best.

This thread is a few months old, but I have questions about pots for a Fender Jazz bass and found the link you shared. The article is definitely helpful, and I have a couple of questions just to confirm what I read.

Some quick background info: I have a fretless jazz bass and I get the best tone (for me) by leaving the bridge pickup volume at 100% and turning the neck pickup down to about 50%. What I notice is that the neck volume drops most dramatically as soon as I turn the knob a little, then it is a more gradual taper after that. I'm guessing this means I have "audio taper" volume pots? I would like to have more control over the taper/curve, therefore I assume I should replace the audio taper volume pots with linear taper? As I also understand, if I want to keep the same (current) sound I should use 250k pots and if I want more treble from the pickups I should use 500k?
