Power adaptor why? Why ? WHY?

Hmmm… maybe you should start a separate thread about the Micro POG specifically. See if other users are using standard power supplies. I’m thinking it must be a pretty popular pedal; I’ve been thinking about getting one myself.
To make it worse the wire on the provided supply is absurdly thin.

You don't need to use the included power supply as long as yours meets the required specs. Make sure you're using the correct polarity and voltage and your chosen power supply meets or exceeds the mA requirements of the pedal.

There's nothing special about the EHX power supply, actually, as you've noticed, it's probably pretty terrible. They just say to only use it in case someone plugs it into some random, not fit for purpose power supply, to then avoid responsibility of a warranty claim.

Most gigging players use an isolated power brick like MXR, Voodoo Labs, Strymon etc. These are usually the cost of a pedal or more, so setting up a proper board can get pretty expensive. There are cheaper power bricks and wall warts which can be sufficient on a budget.

No pedal maker wants to design their own adapters, just to have a cord that's rugged enough for gigging. Doing so would incur the regulatory costs that Andy has mentioned. As a result we're stuck with choosing among the adapters that are made for "normal" purposes, most of which are stationary installations such as residential and office use. That's the bad news. The good news is that a replacement adapter is almost as cheap as a replacement IEC cord.

Some regions, specially the EU at this point, have introduced new legislation to reduce waste (including batteries). Also, damage from leaking batteries is unfortunately an issue. People forget to remove batteries when the pedals are t being used, and even changing batteries when a pedal is mounted to a pedalboard can be a hassle. Using a power supply avoids all of this.
Yes... what I meant by comparison is that with psus, like batteries, pedal builders assume you are going to use your own rather than theirs, with some specific exceptions.

I have actually run into issues using industry standard pedalboard power supplies with other EHX pedals. I never tried the POG, but the Good Vibes, DMMTT, and Electric Mistress models I had all had issues on my standard pedalboard power supplies, issues that were remedied if I hooked up the included wall wart instead. I can't be bothered to have wall warts on my board so they all got sold.

I do recommend using a power supply with isolated outputs as board power supply though, this might be the reason for their caution. Most quality power supplies have isolated outputs.

9V versus 9.6V shouldn’t be an issue because nominal 9V is often ~9.6V (like an alkaline battery).

I wish I could remember the pedal, it's something I looked at recently, but it was an 18vdc powered pedal. It recommended, if you had to use voltage doubling adapters, that you combine a 9v and 12v rather than two 9v because, according to their manual, doubling the 9v adapters wouldn't supply enough power. But a single 18v tap was adequate (like on a Cioks DC7)

Doesn’t make sense. If the two 9V outputs gave adequate current, the series connection (18V) will have exactly the same current.

Note that the pedal industry is like the wild west. Lots of made-up BS that’s technically wrong, written by folks that organize in copying existing work (warts and all) rather than learning how electronics work.

I've used a Micro Pog with my Cioks power supply without issue. I think EHX is covering their ass against someone using a cheap PSU off Amazon which may or may not match the necessary spec and then blowing up their pedal.

I agree, it makes no sense.

I'm skimming stuff I have looked at recently to figure out what the pedal was. It's driving me nuts I can't remember what the pedal was, or why I was reading the manual to begin with.
