Double Bass Power Amps for your favorite Preamps

No, it affects output and doubles the power as I recall. You can use a single speaker. I gigged with this amp and the 3b quite a bit. A Bryston manual would clear this up.
There is also the form factor....Im not a fan of rack space anything that isnt in a rack and I don't want to carry a rack.
Lately I have had the Focus strapped to the back of the MAS 46 (or 16) out of sight, with the Felix on the floor. Very clean, not too many knobs. Stellar sound.
The tube brick, matching volumes and scientific sonic analysis not withstanding, sounded fantastic. I'll bet the M700 does too. I'll bet a lot of things do. IT wasnt that the SS wasn't warm sounding when we compared them, but there was a dimensionality to the tube sound that (I don't care what anybody says to try and dissuade me) sounded right and good and it took the clean powerful signal from the Felix and kind of smudged it ever so slightly so that it felt right and sounded better.

flatback i think all of the Sunn old tube heads are great..the Dyna III probably will mate with your modern preamp really well, if you are willing to make it portable in a box and all of that. The tube rig I have now is a B15s head mounted in rack box. Great sounding amp! Heavy! I haven't used it with my upright, but I know it works very well because a college big band I played with with owned one. The tube thing is very seductive..
EDIT: Oh no..look like You can get the Dynaco kits again..I had no idea.
I left off at the point where you needed to scour junk shops for those, and take them to a tech. "Smudging over the sound", I think that describes it really well..as long as it talkin sync to the signal from your preamp I think it'll be a keeper... sure wish I'd kept mine!

I remember when I first started back in the sixties I used a hifi mono amp with a pair of KT88s. My younger brother built me a front end with a single ECC83. As I remember, it sounded very nice, so much that when 'transistor' amps came in they were all a disappointment. Things have got better, of course.
My friend Steve who owns these amps and collected them over the years working in amp shops, just got reexcited based on our tests the other day...He has ordered a bunch of mods to make the Dynakit into a better more reliable bass amp (driver board power board supply board and connectors) I think ideally the right Dynakit is the mark 3 with its higher power tubes but he was also so into it he was talking about building a new one from scratch.
I love the turn this thread took towards the discussion of potential tube amp pairings. Totally unexpected and even more fascinating. Rather than search for one though, I think I'm gonna go practice scales instead. I sure need it. 
Anybody who wants to build a clone tube amp and can locate the parts can do it. There is no patents or copyrights in the way of copying and old tube amp.

Those hand written cap marking are a sign of suspect parts. The choke on the left is held in with one bolt. The two wire cord is not up to safety standards. Wiring is meant to look good, but things like the HV in series from left to right - nothing and engineer would do. Form factor is heavy on one side due to the transformers. It's not going to fit in a case that is handy to carry.

I've never had a 2B but the Bryston 3 and 4B's are probably my most favorite sounding power amps of all time. People talk about tube amps but I'm convinced a lot of that harmonic magic is in those big-ass transformers. Bridging will double the actual output to a mono speaker array be it one or multiple speakers. IIRC bridged it wants to see minimum 8ohms. In case anyone cares: to run a Bryston 3/4B bridge mono (and I'm 99.9% sure all this is true for the 2B) flip the switch to bridged mode and use the channel 1 input and the two left and right+ outputs with channel 1+ becoming positive and channel 2+ becoming negative.
It's a good day if you are in the market for a dedicated power amp.

Ive been using a Stewart PA100B for while now with EUB and slab fronted by a tonehammer pedal, and that thing is punchy and warm. Not the most convenient pack, plus outdated speaker connects, but mounted under my pedalboard and I dont worry much about it. Like it so much I got 2. Powering a MA(S)109, and a 16 when it decides to arrive.I gotta say the Baby Sumo and Grace Felix combo looks pretty fantastic. THe price is unbeatable (for the Baby Sumo) , the form factor seems totally velcro-able to the top or back of a cab or making a brick out of the preamp/amp. I can see it paired with a headway for a way small package.

Always interested in something like this. 300 Watts at 8 ohms could work depending on the gig. I have a 400 watt Walter Woods that I once used with a Quintet and didn't break a sweat.

and might also be handy for doublers; get a preamp for DB, a preamp for EB, put an A/B switch in between and select according to instrument you would like to use. (Then again, I'm not that tech savy, so it might be a bad idea, correct me if I'm wrong).
While that might seem to be optimal, purchasing two preamps, a power amp, and a decent A/B switch could run over $900.00. As an example Headway EDB-2 $374.00, VulcanXL Pre $299.00, Baby Sumo $316.00. A/B switcher four space pedal board. ect. You're quickly approaching the price of a Grace Felix and Baby Sumo.
Just my take of course.

Hi!! So I'm pretty much an old school dude who's been happy plugging into an amp or pre amp first, but have also been pretty open to other possibilities. At the beginning of this thread I read something about using an AI head to power a pre amp. I have an AI Clarus and a Fishman Plat Pro I'd be interested in trying this with. Could someone explain just how I'd go about doing it and what the benifits, if any, might be? Thanks!!!
