What type of Bass do you play?
Are you going for a sound like background music in small venues?
The reason I ask is because some locations don't need to be loud.
Years ago, I played in a small jazz group with an Upright Bass that I rarely miked and it worked fine for acoustic settings. When I did mike it, I used a small combo - a Peavey Minx - just to add some definition. If you are playing an Upright with the group you decribe, then a 20 watt amp might be fine.
If you are playing an electric, one option may be to run through whatever PA/Mixer the vocalist is running through for additional volume.
