Powered studio monitors to practice with

I’m trying to find a good, not too expensive set of monitors for my laptop. I have Edifier bookshelf speakers, but the bass gets lost in them so I have to use headphones to practice with. Any suggestions?

Having said that I have used Yamaha, KRK Rokit and Yorkville. They have worked well for me.

There's tons of mixing monitors out there that would work - right now I'm happily using some KRK Rockits for recording/mixing/lower volume practicing.

Ideally under $300-$400 for two speakers.

Assuming you're not in a huge room, speakers with 5 or 6 inch woofers would be my suggestion. In that price range theres not a heck of a lot of a difference quality-wise across different brands.

Decent options for powered monitors in that neighborhood would be JBL 305 or 306, M-Audio BX-5, KRK Classic 5, Tannoy Reveal 502.

I have a set of Presonus E3.5's that I use in my home office. They have a nice response and are very reasonably priced (Amazon at $99 a pair). I bought them as an upgrade to computer speakers and to be able to do some mixing and mastering away from the studio. From speaking with the sales rep from Sweetwater, monitors all pretty close in the under $200 range and once you move beyond that level you are looking at $200+ per speaker with targeted features. He said that the Presonus 3.5's at that price point were a good deal. I think I paid about $100 for my set a few years ago and have been very pleased with them. If you are looking for loud, you may want to go larger.

Klipsch 2.1 PC speakers. Loud with good bass response. About $100 online.

I haven’t tried the recent batch of JBL monitors but I’d look at those based on previous experience with JBL stuff. My preference is 6-8” lf drivers / full range design rather than separate subwoofer. Adam has a new budget line not sure if they might have something in that price range.
