Practical MIDI Keyboard Controller for Recording

I wanted to get a MIDI keyboard controller to assist with recording. I have played some piano and synths in the past, but I am not sure I know how to navigate the ba-jillion MIDI controllers out there, many with V1, V2, and V3 versions. I don't know what I really need or don't need, but I am coming at this as a musician, so I don't want a toy or needless marketing features. This is not a primary instrument, so I don't want to spend a great deal of money. I don't have the room for 88 keys, but I am not looking for something so small that it hinders. I am hoping that some folks who were in a similar situation could share some of their experiences with keyboard controllers that worked out well for them.

I see a lot of composer/producers/sound designers using NI Komplete Kontrol S61. Syncs to Komplete 14 Production Software and your DAW. The A61 might be better if you don’t need those extra features. I think the S88 would more suitable if you’re doing orchestral, cinematic sorta stuff.

I have been using several MIDI controllers for the past few years. I picked up an Arturia MiniLab a few years ago and it lives permanently on my desktop. I was also given an Alesis V49 by my son. It has full-sized keys, though not weighted, and works great. So if all you need is a small footprint check out the new MiniLAB III. If full-sized keys are required, give the Alesis a look. BTW- the MiniLAB comes with a ton of keyboard simulations and is very versatile.
