I prefer an 8" speaker for practice because you can get some tone without shaking the walls. Hence I pick the Ampeg BA-108. It sounds great, gets surprising LOUD and costs around 100 bucks.

I'd say the Ampeg or the Orange if it's affordable (sometimes they're over priced).

I mention that just because I know another bass player here who runs his own PA/sound from stage like I do. They all run combo's, including the bass player, and mic or DI everything. He recently got rid of his Markbass combo in favor of an Orange. His Stingray and the flavored DI from that Orange sounded nothing short of awesome through the PA. Nice, fat bottom with loads of character and tone throughout the mids, just a great sounding setup....way more "tone" than the Markbass.

Doubt if any of that applies to your home practice, I was just pretty impressed with what was coming out of that Orange....with his P as well as the 'Ray.

If you just want nice, warm classic tone, the Ampeg will give it to you.

I just picked up an ampeg b108 this week as i needed a good practice amp and for $95 i think it's a great little amp sounds good it's well built 25 watts is plenty for practice, it has an aux in & headphone jack also has an effects loop and a 1/4 line out if you ever wanted to go to a di for recording sounded fuller than the similar sized orange and about $50 cheaper
I would say get the b108 or the b110

Haven't used any of your choices above, but I highly recommend the Eden EM25 Metromix 8'' Monitor Style Combo, which I found for about US$120,- and the Roland micro cube RX for bass (with the 4 tiny speakers), both have huge tone at bedroom volumes, especially the Eden, and both can accomodate MP3 input and headphone silent practise. The Roland has a built in tuner, some effects and a simple drum backing funtion as well.

I would look for something small enough for a practice amp and large enough for small rooms & semi acoustic gigs. A couple of ones that come to mind are a Genz Benz Shuttle with an 8 or 10 inch speaker or a Carvin MB10. Be sure to get one with a headphone option. Sometimes even smaller Amps are too loud (sleeping apartment neighbors or sleeping spouses, etc.).

The amps I use for practice amps aren't listed, but I've found that an Acoustic B100 works well for practicing alone or rehearsing with a group.

Personally I use an Acoustic B200 for a practice amp.

I have a small Crate amp with an 8" speaker and a headphone jack I use when I want to practice without annoying others in the house.
