How come when I practice, sometimes I feel like I'm not doing my best? Then I get around other musicians and they give good feedback on how I perform. What's up with that?
I used to play with a guitard that would drink straight vodka by the 16oz. tumbler full. He was semi functional for the first set and a babbling fool by the third. He always asked his friends how the band sounded and they always told him "good". In reality, it was a freak show, and sounded absolutely wretched. His "friends" enjoyed the game of "lets see how drunk "Bob" (not his real name) can get and still stand up and hold his guitar."
So I quit that band, I can get embarassed in ways that are much more fun.
Moral of the story: make sure you REALLY trust the people who tell you you sound good before you believe it.
Moral 2: People will rarely tell you anything other than "hey, sounds good". Either they don't want to hurt your feelings or they are just trying to be polite.
But you may sound good and they are telling you the truth.
I'm not sure...perhaps your standards are set to too high a threshold. It's ok if you think you've still got a long way to go. That should only give you hunger to get better and better. However, all the while, it's very important you do not invalidate your abilities or beat yourself up about it. High standards are great, but not unreachable ones.

This is the answer I was kinda looking for. The ppl who applaud me say I beat myself up about it. It's like i'd practice finger tapping for one week, but the type of music I perform doesn't require it. I suck at finger tapping, but I guess it helps in a rhythm sense for when I perform which makes my sense of rhythm better
