Practice tips for improving palm mute timing?

I've been listening to and playing along with some early Beatles tunes (I Feel Fine, etc.), and can play the songs almost perfectly without palm muting. However, Paul likes to palm mute, especially on the Hofner, which contributes a lot to that Beatles bass tone. I can sort of get it, but my timing always feels slightly delayed. How can I improve?
