Practicing Live at Home, Bookshelf Style

I'm looking for a PA to use at home for vocals and MP3 recordings. I would like something that I can "turn up" but I don't need to use these for a full live band application. I have some 12" black widow PA monitors from the 80s, but they're too bulky, heavy, and ugly. Any suggestions?

I don't have a price range, per se, but these would only be used 2-3 times per month.
The room size is 10 x 15 or so and it would be 2-3 people max at one time. I'd prefer powered enclosures, since I have a mixer and don't want to add power amos into the equation

Pair of these and a cheap used small power amp. I realize that is falls outside your box. But that's my thoughts.

I am really loving my EV ZLX speakers. Powered 12 and 15 inch models. The thing that makes them different from other speakers out there is the DSP on the back. It makes using the speakers as monitors (floor) or upright really easy and they will always sound great. Plus, the 15 inch is 1000 watts and only weighs about 40 pounds! They are one of the lower priced Mid-range speaker enclosures out there, but they definitely stand up to the competition (QSC K12, which cost $800). A single 12 would easily be loud enough for a small room like that.

I am currently using 4 15's for mains and they sound great! I think they are the best speaker on the market for the money just my opinion though.

I'm using one of the 12's as a straight up bass amp sometimes, sometimes in addition to my SWR WM12, and most of the time for crankin' tunes in the garage while I work. Very nice sounding, lightweight, cheap (~$300), powerful (the 12 is also 1000w). But definitely too big for the bookshelf, unless you read very large books. Or something smaller like Mackie SRM150 maybe? Check the Used Gear section on the Guitar Center website.
