Practicing with headphones

I got a Big Head when i was spending a lot of time in motel rooms and needed to practice and learn new material. I used it a lot for the better part of two years and never had any problems. I don’t use it much these days but i occasionally break it out to use it’s analog to digital conversion capabilities to record to my computer. It is some of the best money i ever spent for a bass related accessory.
That's probably quite good HP amp, maybe too good and expensive for practicing.
I'm using the VOX amPlug 2 Bass and AKG 240 phones. I feel that most HP amps are good enough for practicing but the little in ear h.phones are not.
Cheap HP amp -like the Vox- usually works ok, invest more to the h.phones.

I use the Vox amPlug 2 Bass as well. Sounds pretty good, and lets me hear ALL of the mistakes I make, which is a good thing.
That's me too. I really don't like practicing with headphones. Especially if the product doesn't have any other uses.
Here's my travel practice rig.....
In a medium travel bag....

I picked up a Bighead here on Talkbass a couple months back, I've been real happy with it. It's really great for travel too, I used to use a Irig and the Bighead is way better. I've been a headphone guy forever, wife goes to bed early and I like to work on stuff late.
Partly agree. I think electric bass is meant to play electric. It is sure good if your playing is clean acoustically, but if you can't hear buzzes etc. electrically (headphones, speaker) then its ok.
Same situation here. Late and not wanting to disturb others, I use headphones. The Spectradrive works great. Has other functions as well. Great DI, will drive just about any headphones very well, I/O flexibility good as well as drive and decent compressor.

I love it because headphone makes my mind isolated from everything around me. Also i found headphones are very honest about what you are doing so i find weakness points which are hard to find without headphone.
Now about your question
, I think a small multi like Zoom Ms 60b or Vox stomplab Ib (i'm using it and it's perfect for me) with a nice comfy headphone is a good option too. Also there are many nice pre/DI pedals with headphone out and aux in.

I've been using a Tascam GT-R1 for years. You can store up to 1,000 songs on an SD card so you can play along with them. It allows you to change the speed without changing the key, change the key without changing the speed, you can build playlists, it has a built in tuner, looping so you can repeat a specific part of a song, effects, amp and cab modeling, you can record on it through a line in or through the built in microphone.
Like both those companies. Used the GK RB2000 and a ton of Ampeg gear for years. These will get serious consideration.
I put an Acme Low B-112FR on a four leg stool with a bass head on top. It puts the 12" cone close enough to my ears so that I can play plenty loud enough to practice if I sit right next to it, and not disturb anybody in the condo complex. Headphones are okay, you get used to them if you've done sessions. But they're just one more thing to fuss with when practicing / rehearsing, etc. I much prefer to just use a loudspeaker up relatively close to my ears. No fuss, no muss. You don't really have to play that loud to hear yourself and check your tone, technique, etc. There's EQ on you bass head.
If I required portability, for that kind of money I would acquire a little mixer and keep the rest of my gingle for something else. On the other hand, if I wanted a pretty dang classy piece of very well made gear and had the money to burn for something like that, then great. Go for it.

PreSonus AudioBox... Plug into your Laptop,Headphones on and your good to go.. Many models to choice from and you now have a Studio to record too..

Call me crazy, but I have this idea that you should practice as close to the way you're going to perform as possible.
When I work out of town, I use headphones with my GK PLEX, plug the phone and the bass in and I'm all set. I'm not thrilled with the sound, but it's usable. A friend just gave me a Boss Bass Equalizer, GEB-7 and I'll incorporate that this coming weekend. I'll see how it goes.
Before I thought of using the PLEX, I'd just bring my Mesa D-800+ and using the same procedure, I'd get a great tone as one expects from Mesa, but I wanted to try something smaller and the PLEX has all the interfaces necessary.
