Pre-amp and power vs a head

For me, I would phrase this more like compensate for "cab / stage tone"
FOH and the XLR signal from the SV (with cab sim) should be covering the room and you might want to adjust for the cab / on stage sound.

The Origin does have some additional LF and HF eq on it that only effects the 1/4" out just for this purpose.

When not gigging my streamliner, I gig a Pre/Power amp set-up. 3U shallow rack with 1000w. Weight is not an issue cuz the power amp is Class D.

Can you tell me more about your rack set up please?

It’s exactly that separation (stage sound vs FOH) that I’m trying to get.

I’m using “the room” as a short hand I guess. An example could be - we have FOH but the keyboard player is blasting and there’s loads of organ making things muddy. I want to be able to drop some low mids (or whatever) to balance better on stage.

I can do this by cutting the 220 on the BassRig but that adjustment will hit the FOH signal and potentially complicating issues out front that I’m not aware of.

Why not get a Class D combo amp then. For example, I use a Rumble 500+Ext. cab but i plug into the FX return bypassing the pre-amp as i like my board doing the leg work. You can achieve nearly the same tone though by plugging into the amps input and setting the amps EQ FLAT (not every knob at 12 o clock) this will be different for different amp makers etc.

So what i am saying is you can plug your Bassrig into FOH and have your sound out front, then you can plug it into the amp and STILL have your sound on stage but then EQ on the amp itself to compensate if you want to drop mids etc..

Not familiar with the Bassrig but can you run the DI out to FOH and the Amp Out to your amp then use the LF to cut the boom to the amp, or add a separate HPF between the Amp Out and the amp?

I won’t always have FOH support.

I may be confused, but you're using the EQ pedal to do tone-shaping room correction on your amp+cab setup, right? I was responding with that goal in mind.

I was gleaning that you'd have your preamp and such set to your preferred tone, then use the EQ to room correct so your amp+cab will sound optimal, while still keeping your tone. Did I misunderstand your question?

I’ve been doing this a minute. Over time I’ve found that component systems make me feel more like a rock star because they are big, flashy lighty, and intimidating. But heads and combos are much easier to work with, especially at 2AM when all I want is to get home and go to sleep.

And modern bass heads are amazing- they sound great, they do everything, and they’re plenty loud. The heavier of the two I have weighs 6 pounds I think. My GK MB Fusion is so light and small and sounds so good that I use it as a preamp DI on my IEM gigs. Why not?

Now that I’ve said that, I do lust for a rack mount Jule Monique preamp and whatever he calls the power amp that goes with it. Or at least the idea of one.

Oh yeah, I love a preamp/power amp rig:

Or an old favorite of mine from back then:

I’m trying to room correct from the backline only. The pedal is essentially “set and forget”. Sorry for the brief reply - I’m doing this on my phone.

Gator GR-3S - molded plastic, 3U shallow rack
Carvin DCM 1000L power amp - running it bridged
Preamp by Arkham - the pre is the "bass" channel of a Fender Bassman, with a few bells and whistles - But a very simple EQ.

I have a Y power cable that stays in there. Speaker cable usually rides in the back lid for the rack. Just under 25 pounds.

I used to have a very similar set up, but a big iron power amp and a Fender TBP-1 preamp. Very nice preamp - WAY more tonal control.
