It doesn't look like it was there. It's foam, so I guess it's possible it could have been cut out. But I used to have a Masterbuilt 51 P bass, and the foam mute only covered the 3 bottom strings as well.

It doesn't look like it was there. It's foam, so I guess it's possible it could have been cut out. But I used to have a Masterbuilt 51 P bass, and the foam mute only covered the 3 bottom strings as well.
Looks like it's been cut off for some reason, foam on my '59 covers the G string as well, and the edge is rounded on both sides (like on your E string side).
Never heard a reason why the G string wouldn't be muted, all mutes on early jazz basses were covering each individual strings, including the G string...
Well, again, maybe it was cut by the previous owner. But I've seen it like that on my old CS bass, so I guess it's possible it came from the factory like that.
Either way, I'm enjoying the covers on the bass. Lovin that thump!
Just chiming in here...years ago in a studio in Vancouver I used a P Bass for a few tracks that I believe was a 63 if memory serves...I recall playing it for a bit and loving the thump and held it up to peek underneath the bridge at the foam and it TOO was only covering the E-A-D with the G exposed...the flats were so dead and old (just how I like 'em) that it was almost non apparent whilst playing...

Wow!!! What a collection!!
Just a phone pic from the studio the other day--on the left is my '64 P-bass (posted earlier in this thread with hi-res pics) and on the right is my drummer's '68 P-bass that belonged to his dad before he passed. The '68 isn't pre-CBS but pretty unique in that it's got an A-neck (jazz neck):
It saddens me that the only road worn Texas Instrument I will ever own is a damn calculator from high school. 
That's the kind of wear that really comes across as art. It's obviously genuine wear from nothing more than the same player playing many many many many many hours. All those years of vibrations must have really made that wood settle into a nice tone.
Did you ever get around to doing sound clips of it?
I've always wondered if that was important to others.
I made it a point to find out every possible irrelevant detail I could about mine.
