Pre-EB Stingray replacement preamp

I have been offered to buy a pre-EB Stingray for an OK price. The bass has some issues, but most of them are easy to fix.

The biggest problem is that the pre-amp has been changed to (what I believe is) a Seymour Duncan pre. If I decide to buy the bass, I'd like to change to a pre that sounds like the original.

So, are there any pre-amps that sound like the old Stingray pres, or will I have to try to find an old one?

You might want to check out the "Music Man Sound and Pickups" sticky on this forum. Even though it says "Pickups" I am pretty sure there is some discussion on the various aftermarket preamps.

That being said, The Nordstrand 2-Band MM Preamp seems to be pretty well-regarded.

I don't have personal experience with it, but I do have one of their pickups currently in my SR4 which I am very happy with. This preamp is supposedly based on the original, 70's Music Man preamp.

There are also the John East preamps that can be found here. They also appear to be pretty well regarded and based on the older MM Preamps:

Keep in mind that these don't generally come with a jack plate, so depending on what you currently have (3 knob, which is what it should have come with originally; or a newer 4 knob if whoever replaced the preamp got a new jack plate to fit the Seymour Duncan), you may either need a new plate or get a preamp that matches what you have.

Hi there here's my two cents... if you can get a hold of a later MM preamp the components are the same on all preamps from 1978 onwards... They pop up now and then on Ebay...

I have a '78 Stingray with 1990s preamp and works great.. Tho I have thought about switching to a OBP2 because I think that preamp offers a bit more control, ofcourse of the expense of the true stingray tone perhaps, but they do sound quite warm and musical plus you have indents on the flat position...
There is a clip on youtube of the aggie pickup and preamp in a pre eb sounds really really nice!


if you want to look into the John East make sure you dont go for the model attached on a plate they wont fit a pre EB!
