Preamp for Lakland DJ5

Hey everybody!

I am looking for a drop in preamp for my lakland DJ5. I have seen the Audere and John East options, but I want more control in the passive mode than these provide. Basically, I want it to be fully functional in passive and active mode. Is there anything like this available?

Check product descriptions on the manufacturers' websites. The manufacturers always state whether a preamp provides a passive bypass, or if one can be added as an upgrade.

What exactly are you looking for in terms of sound or control? Audere and JE are both well-regarded but pretty different in terms of what they offer.

John East JTone preamp has a passive tone control. However, the active tone controls are bass and treble only, no mid.

Can you be more specific? What controls are you looking for in passive mode?

Some preamps have a passive tone control. That’s about all I can think of.
In passive I just want typical J wiring, volume volume tone. If that isn't possible i am also fine with volume blend tone. I basically want it to be a regular old passive j with an option for active tones

Check Nordstrand. I think they offer exactly what you’re looking for.

Austere is also somewhat customizable with their preamps, and may also offer a VVT in passive mode.

Hope this helps!

Honestly, what you are describing is way easier accomplished with 2 basses, one active and one passive.

I have the new Trickfish J Core preamp in
my Lull Jazz bass. I know it has a passive mode and a passive tone control. I know that in passive mode, volume, blend, and the passive tone control works, but I don’t know if (and I strongly doubt) if any of the other control work.

And as I have no interest whatsoever in passive mode operation, I’m not likely to find out.

Well, I guess I could try it and report back here later….
That’s not what he is asking for. Why not just say in topic of what he asked?

Sadowsky makes an amazing drop in preamp. It has a tone control that works both in passive and active, the only thing is that is boost only and it does not have a mid range knob. But it sounds and works fantastic.
I have personally used the John east, Audere and Nordstrand. They all work great. The audere is active only. The John easy was great but the center detent bothered me a lot.
The Nordstrand is very transparent

Why pretend you are judge and jury of which responses are on or off topic? I suggest you reread the original post. My comment is relevant. So what makes you right and me wrong?

However, I’ll go ahead and make your day, just for you. I’ll delete that comment.

Happy now?

I have a solution for you. I worked with the awesome folks at Trickfish to create a version of their J-Core preamp for the Lakland DJ. I guess we could call it "DJ-Core"?

The J-Core 2-band is what you're asking for. In passive mode, you have volume, blend and passive tone. In active mode, you get bass/treble boost/cut. Here are some pics of my DJ5 with it.

And here's their website with more info on the J-Core: J-Core Jazz Plate Preamp – TRICKFISH AMPLIFICATION

The problem is that usually Lakland doesn't keep too many spare DJ plates, so you'll need to send Trickfish your original plate so they can fit the J-Core in it. That's what I did. Email [email protected] and he'll hook you up.
