Just wondering... I use Mesa 4x10 subway series cab with the subway D800 head. I was thinking about getting an external preamp pedal for my board, but would this be virtually useless as the sound engineer can connect his xlr right to my head directly in the back? I keep watching these vids of guys raving about their preamp pedals and just wondering if there would be any benefit for me with my current rig...And if there’s any benefit i’m all ears

Preamp pedal or no?

Your D800 head has a excellent DI. I think you would be wasting you money.
I use different basses with various output. Use mine to gain match ... that way my drive pedals down stream see a more consistent signal that is feed into a Radial JDI. The amp gets a bypass signal off the JDI so essentially the signal out of the amps internal DI is the same as the one out of the JDI. Most time the signal from the JDI is preferable as it is less circuitry and dead reliable.
A preamp pedal is great for a special tone at your disposal. If you don't know what to use one for, you likely don't need it. Save the money! I use 2 MXR M81's on my board and set them for two different basses. This way, I can switch between the basses and I have similar output levels and a specific EQ boost built into one of them. Makes live playing much easier.
I use a Tech 21 Bass Driver DI V2 for my clean tone for a different band; I am using IEMs on that one. The tube-like tone really makes it sound better through IEM.
