Preamp question

I am looking for a RACK MOUNTED preamp to go along with a 300 watt power amp that I already have . I will use this for small room gigs.
I'll be using a fretless bass with tapewound flats.
I just want to be able to tweak the mids a bit.

If you don't mind a two rack space preamp, the Trace Elliot GP12SMX (preamp model) would be a good choice. Or for a bit more money there's the Epifani Quest II preamp. Both are discontinued, but show up on the used market from time to time.

If possible, try the preamp with your power amp before you commit to buy. Some general purpose power amps have inputs that are not very sensitive. To get a good signal to noise ratio, the preamp needs to output a signal that is strong enough to drive the power amp input. If it's not strong enough, you won't get as much volume from the power amp and background noise will be more noticeable.

Furman PQ-3, Alembic F1-X, Avalon VT-737sp, Vintech X73i, Manley Voxbox, there's lots of preamps that would be perfect, we just dont know what you are looking for except the ability to tweak the mids a bit. Can you supply more info?

I've been searching for a Epifani quest and am finding that they are quite rare... I'm having a hard time finding one , much less getting to ever hear one live. Do you (the TB community) find this to be true as well.?... or do you secret sources?
