(There's a few variables left - always will be - but you can hear some pretty clear differences between the different models. Thru the computer speakers, the Ampeg & Fender samples almost rattled the vase off the window cill. That's probably a good thing. )

I voted for the Sansamp.... but I got a Peavey TB Raxx in my rig. I really like the sound of it. It does get dirty fairly early... anything past 4 on the pre gain with an active bass, but it is very nice and punchy, even with the dirt laid on thick. Oh, and it's probably one of the cheapest tube preamps you'll find.

Some of the early SVP-CLs had a gin problem if i remember correctly but i think they fixed that..

I went out here and spent almost an hour playing with different preamps. I was amazed at the different sounds coming out of the different basses with the same Preamp. I kept coming back to the Jazz, what a beautiful sound... The AMPEG - CL and PRO preamps had my sound. wierd. I went through strings the other day and I dont know why anybody would play rounds. Whatever. BOB

I play with a pick and the flats just sound like that,
flat.

I've never been able to get into playing with them and easily get "my sound."

Ah, I'm starting to wonder if I should call off selling my Ampeg, but at the same time the tone's just missing something. I've been offered $300 for it and I can get the BBE Bmax SS for that brand new and I've seen some tube Bmax's on here for that also.
So many choices, but I really can't afford to spend more than $300 on a new pre unless I get more for my Ampeg.

Get the Sansamp RPM, not the RBI - it's the growliest piece of gear I have ever heard. I also have a DB659, SWR IOD, and have had the Ampeg CL, Ashdown RPM, and RBI - the RPM is my fav. Growl city.

Well I'm getting a BBE Bmax, I might trade it out eventually for an RPM if it doesn't sit with me well. To be honest, the BBE seems like the best deal, I planned on getting a Sonic Maximizer, so there we go. I already sold the SVT-IIp and my Sansamp doesn't sound too bad on its own into the power amp, it just is missing something.

How quiet is the DI on the BBE?

For a super warm clean tubey sound I use the Alembic F1X, when I need growl, distortion, fuzz or whatever, I use my ADA mb1 with JJ's, yummie!
