Precision vs Jazz at a gig

Those are some pretty old school references. That sort of thuddy tone doesn't really work in today's market. Plus. JPJ has played more basses with different tones than it would be easy to list. You can't really say he it locked into one tone.
As much as I dislike flats on P basses, its commonality is undeniable. Flats on a jazz is a little weird. It is fighting the inherent tone of the bass.
Whatever floats your boat buddy, use what you want. If it makes you happy and play, awesome.
I don’t really care about today’s market anyways, I play whatever I want.
Old school, new school.....its all music. You think flats are weird on a jazz, great , keep going and play with what makes you happy.
I think they are awesome. That’s what is awesome about music, we can all be different.

Ooo, 'buddy.' How wonderfully passive aggressive.

As musicians it is kinda our jobs to know what is going on in the music world. Ignoring it is like being an athlete that ignores modern training techniques or play strategies.
I don't like pop, country, rap or hip hop but that doesn't mean I completely ignore what is happening in those genres. I may not care for it, but lots of people with lots of money do.

My jazz cuts. Sits in mixes absolutely properly. I use a jazz because in my experience, my jazz gets a very accurate P bass tone, eq'd properly, but my P cannot get a proper jazz sound, no matter the eq. I use rounds. I know lotsa guys who use flats. JPJ and others sound better with rounds. And I will tell them that. But? That's my opinion. Not a fact. If you want the flats tone, cool. But I haven't heard a bass with flats outperform a bass with rounds live, ever. Again, on my jazz with rounds, I can cop a pretty dubby, flats type tone with eq and technique. But, I can not get flats to sound like rounds no matter the technique or eq. So, for me, it's about how many reasonably legit sounds I can get out of one instrument. Jazz. Rounds. For me, it's about versatility. For others, might be different.

Ok then.
I sincerely wish you success and happiness in your musical endeavours my friend.
There is a place for everyone in music, it is that simple.

I don’t really care anyways about “lots of people with lots of money” anyways, you can have them.

:)

Cheers.

That depends entirely on what your goals are. If you want to actively compete in the music business then it will probably behoove you to make yourself aware of current trends. If you just want to play and /or produce art then who cares? A lot of originality has come from artists who have been ignorant of musical trends. It's only your "job" to know if your job requires you to know.

So much depends on the individual bass, not to mention the person playing it. The Precision I had didn't sit in the mix nearly as well as my Jazzes. I've heard plenty of Precisions getting buried in the mix and I've heard plenty sitting beautifully in the mix. Same with Jazzes. Bass-by-bass basis. :)

I use both but gravitate towards the Jazz. I find the P sits well in the mix but can sometimes get a little buried and lose clarity.

The Jazz cuts through because it has a brighter sound but there are songs where the P shines and others where it has to be the Jazz so it comes down to what you are playing I guess.
