Presonos Faderport

I have the newer one-fader version, exactly the one that's on your link. It's nice. I however miss the ability to modify audio item's volume (not volume curve and not track's volume -- these are present). and the ability to assign custom macros to some buttons.

the newer version (as opposed to FaderPort Classic as they named the old version now) has more flexibility due to 'shift' button. i.e. there's a mode when you can map fader to control pan, for example.

I have the original. It's USB 1.1. The new version is USB 2. Be aware if you plug the Classic into a hub. It will bring the entire hub down to 1.1 speeds.

The only problem I've had with the Classic is the "I'm alive" MIDI message it sends out about 1/sec. It was constantly triggering my synth VIs when using Gig Performer. I had to constrain the MIDI In block to just my keyboard (which I should have done anyway).

The Faderport should not be looked at as a DAW controller. It's original purpose was to be able to do fader rides when writing automation. While it's true that you could use it as a DAW controller, I certainly wouldn't want to as all of the "hands on, mouse free" time you'd gain, you'd lose working time banking up and down to find the track you want to modify. You also couldn't manipulate more than one track at a time, which is one of the most overlooked features of modern control surfaces. If you want to stick with Presonus, I wouldn't, they make 8 and 16 channel versions of these that would be far more useful, albeit for more money. They didn't put a panner on each channel, which is ridiculous, but it's better than single channel Faderport. If it were me I'd look into what Icon is doing with their QCon line. Even the simple Platform M+ with the D scribble script add-on isn't very expensive and offers a lot more functionality than a Faderport for use as a DAW controller.
