Price quote on a broken Ampeg SVT 4 pro?

I've come into contact with a seller who's trying to get rid of a broken Ampeg svt 4 pro. The treble knob doesn't work 100%, it's missing some knobs, AND he's getting no sound out of one of the power amps. How much would you all say this thing is worth?

I would take it only if the seller paid me. It sounds like the amp is thoroughly trashed!

If you're a tech, $25, if you're not, don't buy the amp.

In general, the cost of repair is probably not worth the value of the amp in good working condition. Even as a tech, I would be wary of putting a couple of hours of labor and say even $100 in parts because the value of the amp is roughly $500 (completed eBay transactions). You could get lucky and only be into it for $300, but you could easily spend $500 as well, depending on the damage.

As a qualified tech, I might be willing to gamble for $50 or $75, but it would be just that... a gamble.

That said, there was one sold non-working for $200, so somebody must have been feeling extra lucky. My experience is that most folks are not as lucky as they think (me included )

Sorry, the Doc says no heavy lifting for the next month or so.
I don’t think the missing knobs will get the weight under 10 lbs.

If amp porn (looking at the guts under the chassis) makes you breathless it could be worthwhile to buy it for a song (a short song) and put it on the bench with an eye toward rebuilding it 100%. If you're not a tech yourself, keep moving and keep your search going.

The last non-working one that sold on Ebay went for around $300. One with 1 dead power amp sold on herr for about $450. I've seen nice working ones that sold on Ebay and Reverb go for $500-800. It seems to depend on if it is a USA built or a made in China. The USA ones go on the higher end. I have a USA one getting the power amps fixed right now.

Don’t waste your time on broken stuff unless you can fix it yourself or it’s a unique/vintage piece.

The SVT4Pro weighs 40lbs and has two good rack handles. It could be used as a boat anchor. But a good piece of iron might be ecologically better. Maybe as a door stop if you could get it cheap but you wouldn’t want to stub your toe on it.


It is a bit of a gamble and not worth paying for.

The main board sells for $365US.
The knobs are about $2.50 each
Tech bench time will be over $100.

Repairs will cost you over $500.

Seriously. Walk away.

I’ve found that unless it’s something truly extraordinary - and you posses the skills to do the fix yourself - you’re better off passing on busted gear. Because most times you’ll have either ended up throwing good money away, or wound up spending more than it would have cost you to buy a working one.

In the case of an SVT Pro, most people that own one don’t just walk away from that kind of investment. So you can be pretty sure the current owner got it checked out first and knows it isn’t worth fixing. So they’re now looking to cut their losses by dumping it.
