Double Bass probably a stupid soun dpost question

so i havent had my bass looked at in 7 years. its been fine. maybe its lost a little sound over the 7 years. its hard to tell really. i'd like it to project more but maybe that's because ive been playing a different bass lately and have that sound in my head. anyway, the question is, how do you know when you need a sound post adjustment? also, can the fit of the current sound post be evaluated with the strings tuned up to tension? i just put a new set on and id hate to start taking the tension up and down on them because i have a feeling they wont like it too much.

Is it a ply bass? Seven years without a checkup seems long to me, but I get my posts changed out with the seasons. I can't imagine any good string set should be affected by changing tension, this is a normal part of playing and servicing the instrument. That being said, I had a Zyex string pop on a recent soundpost change, but I'm sure it would have gone anyway at some point while playing. It was replaced promptly by D'Addario.
