Double Bass Problem with my Ehrlund

Hey guys. I've been playing slab for the last few weeks and decided to dust off the upright today. The Ehrlund pickup seems to be... odd. At first I was getting a faint signal out of it (If I cranked my SWR Baby Blue it was just louder than the acoustic sound). I fiddled around a lot and found that if I press plastic the case in the right way I can get it to sound right. I tried redoing the putty, tried swapping the Ehrlund pre for an LR Baggs, moved the pickup around the body .... even stuck it on backwards but no luck.... I still have a Gage Realist installed - that runs just fine. It's definitely the Ehrlund.

Anyone had any problems with this?.... I could be doing something dumb but I think I've fiddled enough to rule out straight up stupidity.

Suggestions?
