i just bought a pack of the rs77 jazz bass flatwounds not even a week ago and put them on my bass,and the strings were great for a few days and they still had that new clanky metal feel to them for a while.but now only my E string feels like that,and the other three strings sound just as dead as my old strings(if not more) can you provide an explaination if you know why that might have happend?

problem with rotosound 77 flats

They are flatwounds, that's what they are meant for. Flatwound sound bright for a day or two and then they loose all their zing and become thumpy, they stay like that for years. People that use flatwound strings are going for a big fat thumpy tone.
I don't know who told you to buy flatwounds but you were misguided if a bright new string sound is what you want.
The only exeption is the bass player from Iron maiden, he uses flats but changes them before every show.

I just put some 77s on my p-bass and the E string sounds all quiet muted and hollow while the other strings have a thick thud to them.

I've said this elsewhere but it bears repeating as I rejected flats for a long time for no good reason other than "Duff uses rounds, so I will"!
Personally I hate the feel of flats and think they sound terrible on their own...but put them in a band setting and they sound killer!. I bought a set of roto 77's out of curiosity having never played a set of flats, now they're my main string.
