Project: 2001 Squier P-Bass

My friend sold me the bass named in the title of the thread, and i have some interesting ideas as far as the electronics go.

First I'd like to cut into the body and make a slot for a bridge jazz pickup. "But where will you put the necessary volume and tone knobs? There's just no room!", you may find yourself saying. Simple: concentric knobs. Those of you familiar with p-basses know that there are only two knob slots in a p-bass pickguard. Using a concentric knob setup for each of the pickups is the perfect way to include all the variability available in the stunted amount of space.

I always find concentric knobs a little tricky to use on the fly, so I shy away from them. I also prefer a master tone control, as opposed to individual tone controls for each pickup.

What I do with my P/J's is to install a side-mount jack (like on a Les Paul guitar), and use the 3 holes in the pickguard for a V/V/T setup (volume for each pickup, plus master tone). It works well for me.

As always, YMMV, etc.

If you have two tones, they are going to interact.

This is something everybody says, yet on the VM-Jag, it doesn't work out that way.

It uses a stacked V/T V/T setup, and at any place in any of the adjustments, there seems to be no difference in Volume or Tone as far as a negative change goes.

Nope, you can't argue physics. When the volumes are both turned up, the tone controls become parallel with 0 Ohms resistance between them.

If your tone controls don't interact when the volumes are up, you either have resistors in series with the signal path, or the pickups are individually buffered.
