Project idea

I'm thinking about getting an Ibanez GSR200FM to turn into a monster of a bass. I'm thinking of this bass cause of the mahogany body with flamed maple top being good tone woods and the p/j pickup configuration that I don't have on any of my other basses.
I would be upgrading the pickups probably to one of these http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/DiMarzio-DP126-PJ-Neck-Bridge-Bass-Pickup-Set?sku=302285 http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Basslines-APJ2-Lightnin-Rods-Pickup?sku=300339
Then upgrade the tuners to some hipshot's and the bridge to a hipshot tremolo.
Overall price will come out to $650-700 which doesn't seem bad for basically a custom bass. So what do you guys think? Sound like a good idea and good way to get a bass no one else around me has? Worst that could happen is I totally ruin a $250 bass which started off as a cheap throw away bass anyway.

There is a great luthier in town that'll do all the work for me. The hipshot looks more solid and everytime I see the kahler used it always gets this weird clacking sound when doing a vibrato effect with it. It'll probably be a month or two before I can start this idea, just spent $1,400 the other day on new equipment. If I mess up the bass oh well they are cheap. Can get one new almost every week if I wanted.

I like Ibanez basses and doing things this way will give a lot less wait time. Plus in the long run it'll cost less and I'm a weird guy that likes to play stuff that the average person can afford too. I think the most expensive single piece of equipment I have was $630. Plus it's fun to drive people crazy when they see something that looks like a cheap production model that sounds better then someones $1,000+ bass :)

That makes sense... actually, I share a lot of the same philisophies/principles. Nothin' wrong with "jammin' econo"! :p

Good luck with the project & keep us posted!
