This is where I save up $7000 to buy a Spector NS-2 (or NS-1)
I put my first $1500 in savings today.
Some eye candy:

Those are gorgeous for sure. You could go for a euro and be almost half way there already :D

A used euro and your pretty darn close as is :smug:

I haven't had very much time at all with US made Spectors (I've never owned one but I know people that do and I worked at a music shop where they came in occasionally). I have had much more experience with Euros including owning them and they are very well made.

That's plan B when my quest inevitably falls short.

Good luck @kickysam49 ! I had similar aspirations until I caught a great deal on a Forte in the classifieds. Couldn’t justify buying new when used was a more affordable option with exactly what I was looking for.

What specs are you looking to incorporate in your build? And be sure to check out the Spector club for more inspiration!

I'm divided.
Part of me likes the EMG-X with the HAZ Preamp, but I like the simplicity of the passive pickups (Aguilar/Dimarzio) with the fixed boost preamp, since I usually use passive electronics.
I had actually planned to buy off the shelf rather than a custom build. But I may do a custom build.

Have you played a bass with a HAZ preamp? I mostly play passive basses and I agree on the simplicity and love that sound but the HAZ is something special IMO.
I haven't. My plan is, once I have the cash, to actually drive to a dealer that has a good inventory of NS-2s (there are a couple in driving distance) and take my head/compressor with me.

Do it now and make sure that that series of basses and the different configs is exactly what you want and like before saving and spending on something that may not be as good as you dreamed it was. I've made this exact mistake before and spent a lot of energy rationalising to myself that it was awesome, when it really didn't live up to the dream I'd made for it.

I drove about 1000 miles to Florida to Bass Central just to try some current USA Spectors.

There was a faded green one I had fallen in love with on Reverb. I was ready to pay cash for it, after saving up for quite a while. I was astounded that particular bass remained for sale online for several months. It was stunning visually.

BTW, I have a few Kramer-era Spectors and an NS-4CRFM. I have been playing Spectors since 1987 and love them.

It was immediately apparent why the green Spector hadn't sold. Poor fit and finish, fretboard felt like cardboard, poor fretwork, high action, and the G-string kept falling off the side of the neck. It felt cheap and played even worse. Blech.

Disillusioned, I played the three other Spectors they had in stock over the course of a few hours.

I left Bass Central without a Spector.

I was thoroughly disappointed.

Sadly.

Valid point. But If I don’t like them, I will find something else. Or use it for something practical.
