OK, so here is the great scheme.
I’m looking at taking a Squier Jaguar bass body, taking off the pickguard, and routing the P section so it could also take a jazz pickup. Put a standard Fender bridge and Fender American control plate on, attach wires to the pots so that you can quick connect pickups, and route out some slots (this is the bit that will make everyone shudder) as shown so you can slide pickups in with the strings on. I have a really good neck I will put on, leave the pickguard off.
This will, off course, be butt-ugly and never been seen on stage (but may actually be useful in the studio), but I am looking to creating a single library of pbass and jazz pickup played samples for comparisons. This will let me easily swap the pickups on the exact same bass and let me test both j/j and p/j. Each pickup played with exactly the same setup, di into a PC, no effects, no active electronics, same patterns.
Pickups I have a can potentially test (although unwiring pickups from existing basses has a me a bit leery) include:
