Proper fingering technique?

I don't agree with others that the technique your roommate suggested is inherently wrong, just not what most people are taught to start with.

It's not simply "just not what most people are taught to start with". It's rather "we have sixty replies in the thread, not a single person who replied plays like that and not a single person who replied has reported ever seeing anyone play like that".

Yep, like i said it is not very common. But i was imagining the Gary Willis technique which is a very real way to play. I see another post which says said roommate wasn't using the thumb though which is concerning.
