Properly EQing your amp and bass.

I have a Warwick $$ and a GK MB210.

Sweet. Great gear. I'm not very familiar with either so I will guess and let others correct me (and please correct me).

There may be a "notch" in the center of each knob on your bass. If so, that is where you will find that you are neither boosting nor cutting that frequency range. If all of your EQ knobs are set to that center indent, then you should be at "flat" on the bass.

I did a quick search and couldn't find what "flat" is on the GK, but there are tons of GK guys here who may be able to set you straight on that. If not, just try setting the knobs to 12 o'clock anyway. That will at least be a good start.

With a very versatile bass like yours, you may even be able to dial in using mainly the bass itself. So, if you find your sound is too thin, try slightly boosting the lows and/or mids on the bass.

Yes, you will have to experiment a little and get to know your gear. But I find that flat is a good starting point (at least until you get better at dialing in on the fly). Best of luck with it.

I've got names for my ranges as well. It's useful when I'm trying to figure out what I want more or less of. For a 4-band EQ:

low = drone
low mid = growl
high mid = oink
high = fizz

No offense intended to anyone's favorite range :) They're just reasonably descriptive mnemonics for the way I hear things.

A more advanced concept is net-zero gain EQ'ing. This means you don't want to just turn all your EQ up, or all down, but to have balanced additions and subtractions to try to roughly keep the total gain added by your EQ'ing close to zero.

So if, for example, if you find after adjusting by ear the you boosted the bass a bit, some low mids a bit more, didn't touch the high mids, and then also boosted the treble a bit, you might consider instead turning your master volume up, then dropping all EQ settings so you're cutting some high mid, boosting a bit of low mid, and leaving the bass and treble flat. You're balancing the overall cut and boost across your entire EQ.
 
Nobody wants to listen to what I know, so I am in a read only mode. It never ceases to amaze me how little people know about tone. You youngsters need to go on your own tonequest. Pay no attention to the old Fenderman at the bar.
I kind of agree with that, and I'm an old Fenderman ;) Scooping mids is just fine if it makes the music you're playing work. I tend to have my tone slightly scooped as well. There's a fine line between having enough mids and making your amp sound like it's made out of cardboard ;)

Trouble yourself to become familiar with the standard 1/3 octave EQ bands and what they sound like and you can eschew sounding like an nincompoop when you talk about them. Additionally it will make using an EQ a lot easier and frequency spec.s will take on practical meaning.

You didn't rename the notes of the musical scale after the Twelve Apostles and the Seven Dwarfs [excepting Doc of course]. Don't do likewise to the well understood and documented range of frequencies within the scope of your instrument.

What's the advantage of this?
As long as you're not clipping the EQ section, is there an audible difference?

You move knobs until you sound good....period.

"Where" you need to sound good is totally something else.

If you are driving the room with your rig, you (should) want to sound good out there where your audience is, so, you adjust it for that, and just deal with whatever that sounds like up close.

Hint:.....if somebody says they sound "awesome" both 6 ft. in front of the rig AND 30 feet out in the audience, they aren't getting the best they could be in either place......the acoustic environments are vastly different.

If you are in a big/loud venue where the majority of the audience is hearing the majority of you from the PA system, well, you can dial things in to sound a little better to you straight from your rig. Keep in mind the most enthusiastic portion of your audience (the ones closest to you), will still hear a good deal of your amp and if you send a crap tone to the house, you will just sound like louder crap.
 
Different rooms and situations need different EQ settings.
Boosting the low lows may sound boomy in some (most) rooms or compete with the kick drum in dance genres, or it may be the balls in a reggae band or outdoor gig with 4x18s.

When his amp grows a 1/3 octave graphic EQ, this will be useful advice. His amp has labels for "Bass," "Lo-Mid," "Hi-Mid," and "Treble." That's what he needs to be familiar with.

Maybe realize that not everyone should have to know as much as you know to get a tone they like. Speaking for myself, I'll stick with my nincompoopy names until a more useful idea comes along.

Edit: But wait, I probably shouldn't be so testy... My upper mids actually do sound like unicorn farts. That's why I eschew them :-)
 
I'll repeat the advice to start "flat", for whatever that means on your rig. When you get some time to play around, try adjusting all of your EQ controls away from flat, 1 control at a time, both + & - to get a sense of what effect you can detect from each of them. Be a little conservative as far as how much you change anything - give it just enough change that you can tell it's changed. Once you've got a handle on what each range does by itself, try combinations.

"Scooping" refers to setting a graphic EQ (typically) so that from a distance, the whole thing looks like a smile, with deep cuts in the middle, no cut or even boost at both ends. While this may legitimately be the best way to get the sound you want out of your rig, the problem is that often people try to EQ by eye rather than by ear & set according to the numbers instead of what they are hearing. You don't use your ears to feel, your eyes to taste, or your tongue to see, so why should you use your eyes to decide how to manipulate sound? Trust your ears.

Conventional wisdom is that you should avoid boosting. If you want to boost a frequency range, cut the others instead. The reason for this is that whatever you boost comes out of your headroom - the difference in level between your average sound level and the point where something clips. Bass can be a very percussive instrument, with sudden spikes in amplitude. For example, you may have 12 dB of headroom. If you have occasional spikes up to 9 dB above average, & you boost an EQ range by 6 dB, when you hit one of those spikes in that particular range, your signal is going to be 15 dB above your average signal. That last 3 dB above the 12 dB of headroom is going to be "clipped" off the top of the waveform, distorting it. That may actually be an effect that you want, but within limits - you don't want to let anything clip for very long or some piece of gear is not going to appreciate it.

You may find yourself liking certain EQ settings & use them often. If you do this, it's a good idea every now & then to restart from flat & try again. This can help you make sure that you've got what you really want, or you may discover a tone you like better.

As others have noted, what sounds great to you on the stage, just a few feet from your amp, may be completely different out in the audience. As well, every room is different & even the same room can sound different on different days, different full vs. empty, etc. Recognize that more often than not, the stage is about the worst place to tell what anything sounds like out in the house. FOH engineer doesn't set your monitors according to what sounds good to him, out where he sits! Likewise, expect that what's going on out front is not the same as what you're hearing on stage. It may be better or it may be worse, or both in different ways, but you can be very sure that it's different.

What I do when I set up is EQ so that I can hear every note - every string on every fret. Again, starting flat, I'll play 'em all partly as a warmup, but also to be sure first that I can hear every note, & also to fix any note that may not sound right.
 
Aside from some basic heuristics and rules of thumb, like, "Start flat/at 12 'o clock," it's kind of difficult to really provide a working, one-size-fits-all primer on how to EQ. The reason is because having a good ear is generally something that can't be taught like math or reading. That's why there are sound people out there with a lot of technical knowledge but who still can't mix their way out of a paper bag.

With that said, here are a couple of those heuristics I've learned over the years:

-I know many will disagree, particularly those who chase a more mellow tone, but I believe in keeping relatively fresh strings on your instrument. My philosophy is that it's easier to cut what you don't want than try and boost something that doesn't exist coming from the source. Additionally, older strings usually lose their focus and trying to EQ focus is almost impossible. I've rarely ever heard a mix in any style of music where a flabby bass sound or kick sound works.
-You generally don't "hear" the highs of your bass in the mix, but they are very important in giving your instrument presence.
-In my experience, almost all amps require a boost on the bass frequencies; although a little goes a long way.
-If your bass seems to lack body, give a little boost in the low-mids.

Flabby has nothing to do with strings, but a function of EQ. At least IMHO.

For me, a little goes a long way ;) Once you get past 5k, I'll pass on the highs.

-In my experience, almost all amps require a boost on the bass frequencies; although a little goes a long way.
Lately I'm finding that, too, with the exception of the SVT. I am definitely boosting bass more than I have in the past, although it's somewhat song-dependent.

-If your bass seems to lack body, give a little boost in the low-mids.
