Proton en. filter with compressor

I tried my new proton envelope filter today and i found out that its almost worthless when used with compressor. I should have understod that :hmm:
I cant live without my compressor on all the time... Anyone here who combines envelope filters with compressor? Thoughts, hints, ideas anyone?

Sometimes pedals just don't play nice together. I generally don't like putting a compressor after a filter - it smacks down the resonant peak that give an envelope filter its sound. I'd think that having the compressor before the Proton should sound fine....what is it doing to the sound of the Proton?

Well since my compressor more or less kills the dynamics of my playing (thats the way i like it) its just less effect from the filter. I should have known. It sounds pretty darn good on your youtube video Spencer..but i guess you dont use any compressor there?

That video was just my passive jazz bass straight into the REDDI. No EQ, no compression. When I use compressors, It generally tends to be for effect - getting more of a thump or cutting through more with a pick. I use pretty low ratios, so all of my dynamics are still there.

I guess i have to kill my darling (comp.) At least when i use the proton. Thanks for the reply!! Much appreciated.

I have been sitting around jamming with a compressor and the proton for the past couple of hours and have gone through bouts of conflict about the sound and response, but what I eventually figured out was this:
- the amount of quack I get is relative to my pickup blend and amount of low pass in my active EQ. The Proton doesn't have a strong quack anyway, which was attractive to me... I HATED my bass through a Q-tron because it was entirely too much quack.
- the compressor actually helps my signal, but primarily because it's another volume boost. I use a vintage Ibanez BP10 compressor, and it's currently set Attack 1:00, Sustain 9:30 and Level 2:00. That's a big volume boost.
- With all that, I find I get sortof a TLC "Waterfalls" Q sweep when I back my instrument's volume down a couple of notches and lighten my plucking attack. I'm diggin it.
- There are some times when I want a harder, more aggressive "quack", and the proton just isn't that type of filter AFAICT. Then sanity returns and I don't actually like that sound anyway and the Proton is great for me :)
