Protools+Powerbook G4 1.33GHz=CPU overload?

Sorry for the noob question in advance.

So I have a Powerbook G4 1.33GHz 1GB RAM and I know this will run Pro Tools, but will it be laggy? Anyone run it on the same system? Any CPU overload problems with many plug-ins...?

Also, I might upgrade to a MacBook Pro in the future and I was wondering if Pro Tools comes with a single use liscense...or, so that if I load it on my current machine, but want to load it on my MacBook Pro in the future, will I be able to do so? :confused:

I also have a G4 MDD tower 1.42x2 with 2GB RAM...but I want portable set up.

A friend of mine recorded most of his debut CD on an iBook with ProTools and the M-Box. While there is indeed a limit on the available processing power for plug-ins and such, it isn't a big problem if you are patient. (you can "render" a track when you're happy with its sound, thus freeing up processing power)

pro tools requires that you have the audio interface plugged in. you can't even open files to mix without the mbox or 002 or whatever.

not sure how it will like running the same registration key on multiple computers. it might depend on if you're gonna be running protools LE or m-powered.

Hello HeadBanger,

Pro Tools LE just requires that the MBox2/Digi002R/Digi002 be plugged into the computer that you are using at the time. You can install Pro Tools on all 3 computers, whichever computer that you have the Mbox2 plugging into will be authorized for use. In this way, the MBox2 is essentially a "dongle" as well as an audio/MIDI interface for Pro Tools LE.

If you have any additional plug ins that you want to get that are on the iLok format, you can also install those on all three computers and just connect the iLok and the Mbox2 into whichever computer you are using at the time and it will run. To take this one step further, if you record to an external Firewire drive, you can also move that hard drive between all three computers and then you can work on whichever computer you need to for the application.

The iBook would be sufficient for a live tracking computer and light mixing.

I'd recommend that you do the bulk of your mixing on the dual 1.42 at this point since you will get more processing power for plug ins and software synths. Pro Tools LE 7 uses both processors now, so you will have a good amount of processing power for mixing with that machine. Since you have a gig of RAM in the iBook, I think that you should be fine for tracking without being "laggy", but you will most definitely get better performance out of the Dual G4.
