Protools question

Im thinking of getting a new macbook pro, but the only thing holding me back is compatibility...I will be going between using a Protools TDM setup, and the protools LE that I will have on the intel based laptop...do you think I will have a problem starting a session on either system, and then opening the session on the other?

no u wont, i used to go between a mac tdm and windows le setup all the time. The only problem is if u dont have all the plugins make sure u print them to tape before taking it over or the plugins wont work.

I've recorded in Pro Studios using their TDM and then taken the tracks back to edit in my studio using PT Mpowered, then sent those tracks back to the engineer in the pro studio for final mixdown. No problem as far as PT is concerned.

The only issue you may face is getting the files from MAC to Windows. The easiest way is if they burn you a CD/DVD then you can import the files directly. Otherwise if you're using an external firewire drive there is a utility you can buy (name escapes me right now, but I can find it if you need) that will allow windows to see the mac file system on the external HD.

Lastly, make sure that the other studio knows you're going to need Windows compatibility. If they have an older version of PT, they will need to check the "compatible with Windows" check box when they create a new song/project.

Also, check out Digidesign.com. In their support section they have a User Forum (DUC) that is very helpful.

hey ballison,

these guys are correct in their response, but are perhaps confusing windows with intel-based macs. your intel LE and PPC TDM sessions will be intercompatible, though when moving from macbook pro to a PPC mac, you might have to perform a "Save Session Copy..." down to the previous PPC version you are using i.e PT 6.9 etc. The main reason for this doesn't have to do with the intel chip, but is related to the fact that pro tools 7 can handle much longer file names. hope this helps!
