My step father used to say "God protects fools and small children"
We have a saying here (in Turkish) "God protects the drunk".

My thoughts exactly. (only if I believed in a supernatural existence.)
But he probably meant his step father.
Also his father's saying is not true. Thousands of small children die every day of hunger. Some protection that is, unless it's protection from food.
