I really do hope someone at PRS reads these comments. It appears everyone agrees that the powers that be at PRS marketing need to put that pipe down and quit smoking that wacky stuff since they dont have a clue as to how to market a bass.

I spent 4k on my Sadowsky and was happy to spend the money. I went into Sadowsky's shop and played every bass on his wall. No one minded and i felt good knowing I had a bass that spoke to me. Best 4k i ever spent. I think once you past the 3k mark you really need some personal service like MTD, Lakeland, Sadowsky, Fodera, Ken Smith and others.

The PRS Grainger is labeled as Private Stock. This is thier high end line. They should have interested Private Stock buyers at thier shop for personal attention to all details and not rush them off the phone telling them "go to a dealer kid we dont want to deal with you" Thats basically all i got from PRS.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I thought I'd chime in. I'm a pro bass player with well over 20 years experience (live & studio). Granted I live in Maryland so I got a chance to hook up with Gary and play his bass before I ordered mine, but... I've had mine for a little over a month now and it's the best bass I've ever played. Great low & easy action. Killer tones and a totally quiet preamp section. It is also a beautiful work of art. Don't kid yourselves -- this is not an off the shelf bass and I don't know if PRS would ever want it to be. This bass is a custom bass with everything that entails. It took me almost 2 years to get mine made and delivered. But, I picked the wood, the finish, the features, etc. I played the 80's vintage PRS basses too and there's no comparison -- these are great new instruments and the old ones were not. A recording engineer that I work with asked me to lend him this bass for some sessions. He said it was one of the "three best sounding basses he's ever heard." I didn't ask him what the other two were (I probably should have). If you have some spare change to spend on a high end bass then the PRS is definitely worth consideration.

Im sure its a killer bass but at 9k!!! The guys at PRS need to stop smoking that wacky stuff. :) I really want one but I can get a killer Ken Smith or Fodera or Sadowsky or MTD for half the price with much better customer focus. I tried to call PRS and all i got was "go to a dealer kid we dont want to be bothered" So my money is going else where. A real shame seriously!

When I spoke to PRS they told be to go to Bills House of Music in Maryland. They quoted me 8.5k with taxes it would have been 9k. Ok lets assume I could get a better deal at Hamrony Music. If I am spending 7k I want to be able to call PRS directly and know everything about my baby and how its comming along just like you can with anyone of the boutique dealers i.e. Ken Smith, Fodera, Sadowsky, MTD, Zon ect. At this price I dont want to deal with a middle man. If the bass has any issues I want to go directly to the source to get resolved. Any issues I have with my Sadowsky for example have been met quickly and professionally. I like the feeling that I can go to Sadowsky and give my bass directly to him and know it will be taken care of promptly. In my past experiance I have had major headaches dealing with middle men and at 7k I am not sold on middle men. Give me first class direct customer support and the chance to demo the bass and I just may drop 7k on the bass. But as hard as I tried to demo one PRS nor Bills House of Music could deliver. They told me to order the bass and then I could demo it. LOL!!! Yeah ok (NO THANKS!)

I must admit, I met Mr. Grainger at the NAMM show this year and played his bass-- it was unreal. The action was impossibly low (which I like) but it didn't buzz, even when slapping. I own a Fodera Monarch myself which I love, but I would really like to get one of these if I can find one for a bit better price......

I've got one of the original batch of basses that were made by PRS.

Mine's a five string, I love it, and so does everyone who hears it.

I replaced the original preamp with a Bartolini. I wasn't that hard, except for figuring out all the wires from the 5 way switch. I always leave the preamp on, whoever said the bass doesn't sound so great passive was correct, but once it is on the sound really blooms. The main reason I changed the preamp was because the frequencies of the bass and treble were both too low. Boosting the bottom was only audible to whales and boosting the top was more of a midrange boost. The Bartolini solved that problem.

It's also the lightest 5 string you will ever find and easy to play on four hour gigs (which is what I do all the time).
