PRS jumping back into the bass market..

They look great (like the guitars- the PRS guitar shape is one of my favorites). They should have gone with J pickups, tho and v/v/t so they could used the same knob placement as on the guitars as well. I've always wanted to see Jazz pickups in an updated body shape like PRS. That said, these still don't look as nice as their first attempt (the Bass IV and V)
Always THE question when looking at a bass like this.
Surprisingly, these are affordable. In the $2,600 range. $400 more for a fancy top.
Maybe ok. Their guitars tend toward the harsh and shrill side sound wise to me though. So Id diff have to play one before deciding if I liked the basses sound.

These are great basses, but PRS isn't exactly "jumping back into the bass market" with them, considering they only sell a handful each year.
Those are the private stock basses that they've always made... if you want ANYTHING from the private stock at PRS, you pay $7000+
The newly announced basses are a regular line for them, so they will be MUCH cheaper.

I think those $8g basses are the "private stock". The basses they're going to release this year are "...to create a Core PRS bass with all the character and quality of Garys Private Stock models but with a more universal appeal."
OK...too rich for my blood, though. I stii recall the hubbub about Paul's use of CNC machines and the whole "handmade" thing. I remember the great gnashing of teeth that ensued....
Maybe if these are successful they'll add an SE line bass that the rest of us can afford.

$2,600 isn't cheap, but for something made by PRS, it's very affordable.
Yes, we all love the cosmetic perfection and flawless build quality of PRS. I have a PRS DGT in Amber Burst which never leaves its beautiful case for fear of potential scuffs to the immaculate finish.
That guitar cost me £2,800 and yet my £700 Gibson SG blows it away in the tone department. Now if the same is true of this new bass...

Well, maybe if this bass is well-received, they might launch SE models for affordability.
PRS made two forays into the bass market. The first wasin the mid/late 80's, the 2nd was in the late-90's.
The first version had 3 pickups (4 if you cound the hum-cancelling pickup on the back of the bass). The complaints were that it was expensive, and that the tone was on the dark side. Personally, I think these basses are awesome.

The second version was considered to be lackluster in every way, both in tone and construction. They weren't terribly expensive, but you could get a much nicer bass for the price PRS was asking for these.
