Pulled The Trigger On A G&L SB-2 Tribute

I have a Tribute SB-2 a few months now and it the metallic red with white pickguard. It is a wonderful bass and very handsome. The black pickguard you have reminds me of Tuxedo versus a White Dinner Jacket. My current strings are Fender Nickels and I am wondering what you thought of either DR Sunbeams (45-100) or the Ernie Ball Super Slinky #2834 (45-100) or what you recommend. Thanks.

Strings to me are just strings. I like steel better than nickel and I usually go with a 45-105 but other than that, I don't give much thought to brand. I actually use strings from www.webstrings.com They used to be only $10 a set and worked just fine for me. I see their price is up to $12.99 a set now, which still isn't bad.

I'm actually contemplating a set of flatwounds just for fun.

My SB-2 is forest green with pearloid pickguard. I would very much like my PG to be black to go with the green. Do I have to call G&L for that?

Most likely unless you can find a vendor that sells G&L pickguards. I think it would probably be best to contact G&L or go through a G&L authorized dealer. I know Fender changes theirs just slightly every so often so a pickguard from 1962 likely won't fit a '73. I don't know if it's the same for G&L or not.

From the G&L website,

"To purchase a replacement pickguards for your G&L instrument

Please visit our Chandler Guitars, maker of pickguards for G&L. They can supply custom pickguards also."

I don't see a listing for SB-2 on their list anywhere which probably means you would have to send in a tracing.

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling I may have to take my pickguard off and send it in for tracing anyways. I did hear from somewhere that SB-2 pickguards have a few slgihtly different screwhole configurations depending on the year of the bass. I wonder if it is true.
