Pulled the trigger on an SX (essex)

I got the 75' in NAT. Just "pulled the trigger" last night. Very exited to start makin' the thump!
I like the stock SX pickups, and I think you will, too.
For strings, I'm a flats kinda guy, so I replaced mine with D'Addario Chromes and they give it a fine sound.
My neck was terrible when I got it, but setup instructions here on TalkBass got it playing well in no time.

I purchased a 60s style SX j bass from Rondo( pickup covers, thumbrest etc) and used it as my main gigging bass for a few months. First thing i did however was slap on my coveted Fender Jazz neck from a bass I've had since i was 15(this neck really gets around) and later a BadAss II bridge. Really had no qualms with the bass-looked good (especially with the covers on), felt solid and sounded like a J bass should. Definitely get some new strings on it ASAP. The only reason i put my SX back together and sold it (for really cheap) was to help a friend who got involved in a church band. Well, that and I LOVE that neck on my black P-bass....so light and comfy. My Marcus Miller covers the Jazz bass duties now. Check out all the SX mod threads on TB for some ideas for the future.
Bringing a thread back from the dead completely. Well I finally was bored and I just got my new mic cable so I decided to post clips of the bass. Sorry if you cant hear me talking and if I sound nasally, Im sick. But the bass is louder since I was talking a couple feet away from the mic. Also Im just doodling, so let me know if its too busy and I can re-record it. Here it is:
Nice job!! Was very obvious when you rolled off the treble. I couldnt tell a huge difference between each pickup solo'ed but it was present.
Not "too busy" at all! Nice easy noodling to show the tone. Also, I had no issue hearing you describing what configuration you were using.
Nicely done and thanks! Gives a good reference point to others who might be considering these basses.
Only question I have is-what strings are on there? Do you still have the stock strings on there or did you swap them out?

I'm curious, how about an six month review? Still happy with the bass? How about the pegs and pickups? Any issues?
I'm about to join the sx club, probably with some sort of short scale. It's like somebody said in another thread, you give up lattes for 30-45 days and get a new bass. Incredible and I'm anxious to see if they are as good as claimed.

No those are D'addario EXL165 nickelwounds I believe. They have been on there a couple months and still sound great. Thanks
I actually love it now that I've had it longer. When I first got it, I thought, wow I guess I got what I paid for. Then I gave it a setup, figured out different tones, and I love it. The tuning pegs hold up very nicely, I can go without tuning for months. The only thing I don't like are the pickup covers. They look great when on, but the bridge pickup is a tad small. The ball end of the string pushes more than the stock strings so the screw goes on kind of screwy. (no pun intended)
The pickups are sweet IMO. They have a lot of punch for a basic stock pickup.
But overall, money definitely well spent.
Bought one of these a few months ago primarily to learn how to do setups, i figure if i screwed something i'm only out $150. well, for what i paid for i'm impressed. I learned how to do setups and can now do my own now and set the cation low, put a new set of strings on it and it plays really nice, no complaints, these are definitely worth the money.
Mine was a Christmas gift from my wife, so as long as she's here, this bass will be too.
She bought me a white 62 PJ w/black PG and rosewood board. Looks really "punk" to me!
I have a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky's to put on but I'm waiting till I bust a stock string before i make the change. I want to see how they'll last.
I usually bring my SX as a backup to rehearsal and one of our songs has me doing a fair amount of very basic slapping and popping-i figure if i dont break a string on that tune, I'm gonna let 'em roll for a while!!

I've been thinking about going for another SX for a while.... more than likely another P-bass. I may be mistaken, but didn't there use to be a P-bass model LTD?
