Punk influenced metal bands

the genres of hardcore and thrash are just this. thrash being the more metal side, and hardcore being the more punk side. punk bands wanted more edge, got it from metal. spawned hardcore. metal bands wanted more speed, added punk, we got thrash metal.
judas priest - metal
metallica - thrash metal
buzzcocks - punk
gorilla biscuits - hardcore
its a matter of where in the spectrum they lie. its come back around in circles and spawned all the core genres. we got death metal. then we put breakdowns and blastbeats in death metal.. now its deathcore. pretty simple.. it just becomes a fight when someone doesnt want to be called a certain thing.

Thanks everyone, I was trying to describe a new approach to my bands music. And the "p" word scared everyone. After reading this and doing some thinking, I think what I meant was more of a thrash vibe. Fast riffs and loud screaming, a less polished sound or "raw" sound.
gorilla biscuits? really? I think i might of gone a different route like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Sick of it all, Minor Threat, and they pretty much derived from Oi with the add on of distortion to guitar amps in the late 70s early 80s.
True that, the Biscuits are still an epic band that are slotted into the HC genre tho.
So you are trying to think of what style to call yourselves without straight out saying punk? I could be more helpful if you have some music to listen to. There are about a million genres influenced by punk and metal. I can think bands like Sabbath, Venom, Motorhead, Black Flag, Cro Mags, Gang Green, DRI, Exodus, Megadeth, Metallica, Misfits, Verbal Abuse, Minor Threat, Poison Idea, Negative Approach, Slayer, these are bands I often see credited as influences. Thrash is a term that gets used kinda loosely. Thrash was a form of punk, then crossover thrash came about and the term was used very generically. Now the "punk" thrash bands have been labeled as thrashcore. It's all a little confusing.

My sig has our website link if you want to listen. Basically what I am getting at is, our drummer has left us and now is a chance to move the music in a new direction. Right now we are a metalcore band in the vein of Killswitch, God Forbid, All that Remains. But I think that metalcore is a dying style and now would be a good time to reinvent our sound. And knowing the singer, I feel he would make for a good punk influenced metal band. Something raw like Hardcore, but fast like punk thrash , while keeping it under the metal category.

I don't want to hype it up too much but... this was a revelation for me, Really!
Check these guys out. They have been my heroes since last year. This is kinda what I have been trying to get together. Not trying to do a direct ripoff, but in the same vein. Progressive Thrash...has a nice ring to it. Progressive to show your musicianship, Thrash to show your no holds barred approach. I can't get over how jaw-dropped I was after listening to them for the first time. My CD of their's is overplayed and I am working on the vinyl now.

Helmet is a great example. Lots of early 90's AMREP bands have huge Punk influences, but are all basically Hardcore/metal.
Got to agree with Fudge Tunnel Too. Though they definitely learned way more metal as time went on.

Lamb Of God has said that they are a punk band playing metal. They are definitely technically proficient, which some people may not see as "punk", but here's why I agree with them:
Almost three albums worht of their work is anti-bush rage metal.
Punk, at it's truest form, is social commentary, just like hip hop. Lamb of God didn't hold back in their criticisms of Bush or militarism. That's punk as f*ck

Oh definitely but they are "punk influenced" for sure.
They are one of the most tasteful metal bands today, IMO. NOT that I'm big of a metal head, but just sayin, they're nice and groovy
Most early heavy metal, speed, and thrash is influenced by punk. Sodom is, to this day, heavily influenced by punk (stalinorgel, Ausgebombt, etc.) Just listen to "Sweet Danger" from Angel Witch. Classic metal full of punkiness.
That's why the answer in short is, most older metal bands were influenced by punk. Some people even use the drum terms "punk beat" and "thrash beat" interchangeably.
