PUPS without EQ?

i'm sorry, you say "check the shielding" but I dunno what you really mean. you should talk very especifically so that a dumb person would understand :p

You should never call yourself dumb. If you don't know something you can learn it. That doesn' make you dumb. :)

Really if you don't know anything about wiring, bring it to someone who does. Some of us make a living of it, and we need customers! :D

What I said was:

one thing to look for is the control cavity might be shielded with either conductive paint, or copper foil. When you disconnected the pots, you disconnected this shielding from ground. I'm guessing it's paint, so you need to reground it.

See the dull dark gray paint in the control cavity? That's shielding paint. That needs to be grounded.

OK try this. See how the cover has foil on it? That is also shielding. That touches the gray paint. Get a thin piece of wire. Strip some insulation off both ends. Solder one end to the ground at the jack.
You can also try and tape the wire to the foil, but you can't solder on that because it's aluminum, and will melt the cover.

You can also try wrapping the other end around one of the screws that holds the cover on, making sure it touches the foil. You will have to stick the screw though the cover first.

That should fix your hum problem.

Also make sure your jack is wired correctly.

By the way, after all this you probably will find the bass is not any louder, but it will sound different.
 
I tried wiring my pups directly to my jack and I got alot more treble in my tone.

I found this too - I've a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder wired straight to the jack and it can take your head off!!!

My take on it though is that THAT is the sound of the pickup - what you're used to is the loading effect of the passive EQ. It's pretty easy to back off the EQ on the amp and remove the excessive top end. On the other hand there's no way the amp can put back what the bass controls have stripped out.

it sounds more RAW and full, the only bad point is that the harmonies and treble went down in volume, but after plugin it back on the BOSS GT6B pedal the treble and everything gets perfect.
I noticed an overall quality increase in sound definition, but it's still not a very full and powerful sound, due to the pups are cheap and used as standard on the cheap basses of ESP. The other version of this bass with EMG pups are 3 times the price. =(
Now I have to think what i'm going to do with the holes that the knobs left in the bass...

edit: maybe the treble thing was too high before and now it seemed low... yeah because all is equal after some analysis =)
 
I've had a few customers come in with those basses and had me replace the stock pickups and preamps. Some even had me replace the EMG pickups.

I did one with Classic series Barts and an Aguilar preamp. That sounded really nice.

I did another last week, passive with my pickups. That sounded really nice too. :D

it's a nice bass.
 
so basically, ground has to be done by some kinda ground-material hm?
so is alluminium one of them? or the cover just looks like alluminium?
it could be pretty useful if I ever have to deal with same situations, and maybe just wrap alluminium paper around the ground area to avoid extra wires and work
 
The control cavity is shielded from electrical noise. They do this with paint that has carbon in it, so it conducts electricity. The cover does have aluminum foil on it. The cover touches the edge where it overlaps on the conductive paint, and makes an electrical connection.

The paint was originally grounded by the potentiometers touching it, and they had ground wires on them.

So when you removed the pots, you also removed the ground connection to the shielding paint, and the cavity was no longer shielded, so the unshielded wires from the pickups picked up hum.
