Purchasing a Hartke stack but...

OK, so I'm buying a Hartke 5500 head and a Hartke HX810 from a friend that has only recently bought them but he is quitting bass so he is selling em for cheap. But I'm thinking of just re-selling them for more to get a GK stack.

What are your opinions when comparing these brands?

BTW, this will be my first stack, upgrading from a 15 watt amp... I don't know much about amps at all.

Yeah, I'm cool with transporting it, I have access to a ute. The thing that I want to know is whether I would be better off spending the same money on a smaller Gallien Krueger stack and just selling off the Hartke stack for more? Or maybe using the Hartke cab with a GK head? I don't know...

Personally I prefer GK gear over Hartke, but you really need to try some GK stuff for yourself to see if you prefer it over the Hartke. I know in Australia that can be pretty hard, depending on where you are, but its the only way to know for sure.

The other option would be to pick up his gear for cheap, and then sell it and get hold of a GK rig. Give the GK stuff a go, and if you don't like it, you can always sell it and move back to Hartke or another brand. If you buy and sell in the used market, you shouldn't lose much along the way.

Only problem with that is that your back to not actually knowing which setup you want in the first place. Again, this goes back to really needing to try the gear for yourself. Otherwise, you'll just be buying based on others opinions, which are neither right or wrong, but they may be different to yours.

I think the OP wants a Gk stack- and they definitely create a fantastic product but do what KarateKid suggests and give them a try. I'm hopeless trying stuff in music stores- i usually have to wait till i have it home before i know whats going on.

An 810 is fantastic, but sometimes not completely necessary. I think if you can start with a decent head and a 410 it will usually be enough for most situations- atleast you can add in the future. And if it comes to resale, it'd be alot easier to sell a 410 than a 810.

Both brands are good- I prefer GK but its personal preference.
