Optima makes medium scale strings that are nickels (flats and rounds).
Just got a .120 flatwound longscale B string from Pyramid and love it straight out of the pack. Have it on this Jazz tuned BEAD (.100 E) and feels and sounds well balanced to my tastes. With the lighter .120 B, that string seems much more usable through the full range. Some won't like the violet colored silks but they do work on this bass IMO
Nice, I bet it sounds super fat! What gauge are the rest of the strings?
60/75/100/120 (I had a 45 for the G when tuned standard)
For comparison the ever popular TI JF344 set is 43/56/70/100.
TIs are dwarfed in comparison...
Currently Fender 9050M (55-70-90-105) on my Pbass. I like fat flats. Previously had a 50-70-85-105 Pyramid flats set and liked it a lot, perhaps more so than the Fenders.
Hello everyone! I'm thinking about buying pure nickels for my P-bass with SPB-3 pickups.
I'm currently playing Chromes and would like to get back to rounds, but I don't wanna strings with too much high and high mids, since SPB-3 have that in spades...
GHS Balanced Nickels caught my eye but they are not available in my country and Thomann doesn't have them in stock. So maybe Fender 7150 or Pyramid Pure Nickels? How do they compare?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

These strings at Thomann are actually for a short scale, but I think I'll order a set from Lord of the Strings!

Have both, like both. Both sets standard 45-105 gauge.
The 7150s have less treble content, more tension but still normal, are less flexible, and have a somewhat rougher feel to them. Overall tone is also rougher, less refined.
The Pyramids are quite chimey, especially when fresh, have less tension (on the lower side of normal), are quite flexible, and smoother to the touch. Overall tone makes a refined impression.
I would highly recommend the Pyramid pure nickels - as @Phaidrus mentioned, they are quite clear and bright when new … but they age into a beautiful “burnished” tone with a subdued treble. These and the Gabriel Tenorio pure nickels are my favorite nickel rounds.
I revisited the GHS Balanced Nickels on my fretless recently and was very pleased with those for different reasons. Their round core construction (and maybe their unique wrap method too?) bring out the best traits of pure nickel with a little bit of the articulation and suppleness of DR Sunbeams. Great strings and they stand apart from some of the other nickel rounds.
Just a note on that. I ordered that and did get 4 packs for $50. Ordered it again and I received a one pack and was told the first order was an error but was told to keep it.
Yes, Pyramid Pure Nickel rounds are excellent strings, they sound deep and tight as they age. Very easy to play too, flexible and smooth.
What I do not have experience with, is how Fender 7150s sound when old and worn. The set I've used didn't stay on my Pbass for very long as I wanted to experiment with other strings. I really liked their raw attitude and I'm even considering buying a third Pbass to put them on as I don't want to take off the Pyramids nor the Fender 9050M flats on the other Pbass.
I currently use SIT Foundation or DR Pure Blues in 45-105 gauges.
If I were to get some Pyramids, which gauge should I go for?
I'd suggest 45-65-85-105.
Pyramid pure nickels are quite flexible and low tension, it seems to me.
More so than, say, 45-105 D'Addario XL, which are regarded as a mid way reference set.
If you do go for this gauge, please let me know how they compare to the DR Pure Blues.
They have no silk at all. Just pure nickel!
Edit: You can probably ask them to do a custom set with silk ends, if you'd like.
