we went with dimarzio area Js in all three positions (two "necks" and a "bridge"), and put an electrosocket on the side to open up the fourth hole on the front.
i wired it "stock" V/BL/T, and used the extra hole for a 3-way rotary that just switched between the neck and middle pickups, sending the result to the rest of the controls. that way, with the rotary dialed to the "old" neck pickup we get totally normal jazz bass sounds, with it dialed to the new pickup we get panning between the outside pair for the hofner vibe, and with it switched to have both we get the N+M or all three.
this way i avoided the tone loss from multiple volume pots and the interactive weirdness from having the tone pot after those multiple volumes; i prefer V/BL/T on regular J basses too, for just this reason.
