better intonation control, vibrato, slides, sustain and speed. (but I'd put it on the hands instead of the strings)

Nose grease. If you're fastidious about your hygiene, it's probably the cleanest and most bass/guitar friendly lube out there.
Make it obvious when you do it. It'll keep others from wanting to play your instrument.
Wipe the strings and instrument clean before putting it away for the night.

I would think it would mess with the magnetic properties and quiet the strings down. What I do is wipe the sweat and oils from my forehead onto my fingers. Gives me that slipperiness I need whenever my fingers get dry.

God, some of you are really gross. Don't ever look at your basses under a microscope with all the skeevy rancid crap you put on them!

I would go mineral oil or Fast Fret every time.

Just NO, don't do it man, flats are smooth anyway so you don't want your fingers slipping off and having some horrible finger caught under strings accident.

I make it a point not to use nasal "greeze"for anything.
Some might mistakenly thing you are using another nasal fluid

Not nasal fluid. That's from inside, like boogers'n stuff.
But if it keeps folks from asking to touch my instrument...that works too. lol
